Try Scuba Diving

Looking For A New Adventure?

Try Scuba Diving! It’s your opportunity to discover the magical world of colorful fish and discover the world that lies beneath the ocean waters - Scuba Diving! There’s nothing like it!

Scuba Diving is much easier than you think and our Try Scuba Diving experience will prepare you to participate in this new sport that awaits you.

What’s involved …first you will spend some time with us following along as we give instruction to familiarize yourself with the equipment, the environment and the science of diving.

Then we’ll take you to a local beach  where the conditions are  calm, much like a swimming pool.  From there you will walk into the shallow water with your gear on and practice some basic scuba skills with your instructor.

Once you are comfortable, your instructor will take you on a tour and this is where you will find the beauty of the calm and peaceful place as the fish swim around you .

This course is offered as a destination diving course or in a pool ( when time permits)

Let’s go diving!

2

Open water scuba diver

Diver certification begins here.!

To enroll in the NAUI Open Water Diver course you must be 12 years old or older. You need adequate swimming skills but no prior experience with scuba diving is required. During your course you will learn all the scuba skills required to complete your open water certification. On completion of the full course you will be issued with your certification card and will be allowed to present your card anywhere in the world and dive to a depth of 60ft.

The Open Water Course requires you to complete 3 components to complete your certification:

  • 1: eLearning/Knowledge Development. We are doing all of our courses with the online theory so you can go learn at your own pace, however all students are required to complete ALL sections and the final exam before the start of the Confined Water (pool) sessions, otherwise we will ask to reschedule the start date.

  • 2: Confined Water Sessions. All new divers will begin learning their skills in a pool first. The pool is where you will be required to complete all of the skills before going to the ocean.  The training will  require 3 classes  at 3 hours each for you tto be taught  the skills required for the course, so be sure to ask your us how you are progressing along the way! If more sessions are required , fear not , will can schedule them for you as you will only do the ocean dives if we say you are ready.

  • 3: Ocean Dives. After you have mastered all the skills in confined water, you will begin your ocean dives to explore, see some exciting wildlife and complete your certification. We schedule our ocean dives on the weekends and you will need to complete 4 required ocean dives (2 Dives per Day) to complete the course. You are required to attend both Saturday and Sunday of that weekend .

  •

Additional Drysuit training is also available for the course, and is highly advised for diving the oceans of the West Coast.

Class and Pool Only - Referral

If you choose the Class and Pool option , the price you pay will include your eLearning and your confined water training. Rental equipment is included for your pool training (except mask and snorkel) so you can experience high performing equipment without extra cost. This is a terrific option for students for wish to complete their ocean dives in tropical water or on vacation but want to complete all the academic and pool training first.

Prior to signing up, we encourage everyone to look over the Diver Medical Form to make sure they will be cleared to dive.

Commitment to Safety Enjoyment

At 130 FT UNDER  we believe in making sure all our students are receiving the highest quality instruction and customer service. We are open and honest about what your needs are during each part of the course. This means it is normal for some students to be asked to return for extra training (pool or ocean) prior to certification. This ensures all of our students walk away with everything they need to be safe and have fun for every dive they do following the course.

3

Advanced Scuba Diver

The Advanced Open Water Diver course is actually the second part of a two-step process designed to help create better-trained, more thoroughly prepared entry-level divers. Therefore, it is not really an “Advanced” course per se, but rather a more advanced Open Water Diver course (as opposed to the basic Open Water Diver course). The Advanced course focuses on three areas:

  • Review and enhancement of basic core skills

  • Natural and compass navigation

  • Planning and making dives to 40m/130ft

  •

We will also conduct a wreck dive, a night dive and a marine life identification dive.

Prerequisites:
Open Water Scuba Diver certification from any internationally-recognized agency (NAUI, SDI, NASE, PADI, etc.)

When to Take the Advanced Course:
After completing your SCUBA diver training, the Advanced Course is designed to be taken immediately after. You’ll be introduced to the the areas of diving that interest you while gaining practical experience .

4

Enriched Air Nitrox EANx

Enriched Air diving is now extremely popular worldwide for many reasons. It is safer when you are doing longer dives or multiple dives because of the lowered nitrogen intake. People tend to feel more refreshed because of the extra oxygen, and most importantly you are able to increase your NDL or No-Decompression Limit to have longer and more relaxing dives. If you enjoy deep wall dives, wreck dives that don’t start until a little deeper, or just want to be safer by reducing your nitrogen loading and stress, Nitrox is what you want to be diving with.

What You Will Learn:

With the Enriched Air Diver Specialty you will learn how to choose the appropriate blend for each dive, how to follow your depth limits and why, how to notice signs of oxygen toxicity, and how to properly analyze and label your tanks. The course consists of an online eLearning course to understand the theory of diving Nitrox, and an in-class session to practice analyzing and labeling as well as review with your instructor.

Course Description:

  • You will receive an eLearning code for the knowledge development and exam to complete before coming to see your instructor

  • You will go through proper analyzing techniques, labeling, and sign out procedures.

  • You also have the option to add the EANx specialty to another course

Course Prerequisites:

  • Open Water Diver required

  • eLearning completed before class review and practical assessment

4

Refresher Scuba Diver

The number of certified divers in the world has grown tremendously in the past few years. Accessibility to dive resorts and dive centres offering dive excursions have also become more available. Because of this growth, dive operators are requiring that certified divers have a more consistent practice of diving and can show this through recently logged dives or a refresher course conducted within as little as the past 6 months. Refresher courses will indicate a diver has reviewed their scuba skills and refreshed their knowledge of diving. If you are travelling soon and need to show proof of diving this is the course for you. Divers who simply wish to keep up their practice can take a refresher course at any time.

A refresher course is supposed to do exactly that: refresh your dive skills. We will spend a full pool session to review all the basic skills you learned through your Open Water course so you can safely go enjoy your next dive experience, whether that is a trip to Curacao  or a dive right here in Vancouver!

What You Will Learn:

Students will review how to set up and break down their dive equipment, pre-dive safety checks, deep water entry, mask clearing, regulator recovery, neutral buoyancy skills, proper descents and ascents, and self-rescue scenarios. Students will also be guided through personal fitting of dive gear, use and understanding of a dive computer if they have one.

Refresher Options:

You have two options for your refresher: Pool refresher or a  refresher plus. The Pool Refresher is just one evening in the pool to ask questions, review gear setup and maintenance, and in water skills. The Refresher plus is the same thing, only it includes two guided ocean dives after the pool session.

Course Description:

  • You will spend on evening in the pool to review gear setup and practice skills underwater

  • If you have chosen the Refresher plus you can then join us for one of the ocean dives , as long as you are dry suit certified.

  •

Course Prerequisites:

  • Open Water Diver

  • Dry suit certification for the ocean dives

  • Have not been diving in 6 months - 1 year+

5

Rescue Scuba Diver

We believe this scuba rescue diver course the most important dive course that you can take. It’s both “challenging” and “rewarding” because the training builds upon the skills you already know about preventing problems and managing them when they occur.

Additionally, you will learn how to assist other divers and enjoy the comfort of being able to handle situations as they happen.  This course is also your first step on the way to becoming a dive professional.

Upon completing the course, we often hear divers say that the Scuba Rescue Diver is the best course they’ve ever taken..... and it is !

What You Learn

  • Self rescue

  • Recognizing and managing stress in other divers

  • Emergency management and equipment

  • Rescuing panicked divers

  • Rescuing unresponsive divers

6

Drysuit Diver Specialty

The Drysuit Specialty course is built for certified divers who want to learn how to dive in a drysuit. Since the drysuit is an entirely different air space there are different techniques you need to learn to be able to comfortably and safely make a dive.

What You Will Learn:

Since you learn the most about diving a drysuit when you are actually diving, we only need to spend one evening in the pool after receiving your eLearning and then we go out for a whole day in the ocean for 2 dives. You will learn about air space management, when to add air and where, proper drysuit undergarment layering, and weighting and movement techniques specific to drysuit diving.

Course Description:

  • You will get an eLearning code for the drysuit course to do the knowledge development on your own time

  • You will have 1 evening in the classroom and pool to talk about proper drysuit use and learn some safety drills and diving techniques specific to drysuit diving.

  • You will spend 1 day in the ocean, completing 2 dives, to get the certification. These are usually done on the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday.

  •

Course Prerequisites:

  • Open Water required (for the full specialty certification).

7

Master Scuba Diver

The NAUI Master Scuba Diver course involves specific training in the theory and practice of:

  • Emergency procedures and rescue

  • Deep/simulated decompression diving

  • Limited visibility or night diving

  • Underwater navigation

  • Search & recovery – light salvage

With the Master Scuba Diver rating, you have reached the highest non-professional level in diver education. It means that you have acquired significant training and experience in a variety of dive environments. Master Scuba Diver certification is required prior to taking any professional certification courses for NAUI and NASE.

8  /   Lion Fish Hunter

Only offered as a destination dive

The lionfish is an invasive species in the Caribbean as the Caribbean is not their natural home so they don’t have any natural predators here.  The lion fish have the chance to multiply quickly, overtaking and killing native species, which results in a huge danger for the local environment and aquatic life.

To control this invasion, hunting lionfish hunting is allowed and there is no limit.

The Lionfish Hunter Specialty consists of a knowledge development session, practice using the hunting tools and two training dives actually hunting lionfish.

What you will learn.

  • How to catch and contain them

  • proper handling

  • how to clean and prepare

  • dinner is optional and can be discusses at the start of the session

  • offered only as a dive destination course

The entire course takes one full day.
